Maila Hietanen is a Research Professor and Leader of the the Non-Ionising Radiation Research Group at Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH), Helsinki, Finland. She has a background in applied physics and biophysics, and her research interests focus on evaluation and prevention of health risks related to human exposure to NIR. In recent years her research team has been doing research on the neurophysiological and cardiophysiological effects associated with the use of mobile phones. In addition, her research interests include studies on subjective symptoms of persons with perceived electrical hypersensitivity. Maila Hietanen is a Board member (2001-2007) of the European Bioelectromagnetic Association (EBEA). She has served the Board of the Bioelectromagnetics Society (BEMS), and was an Associate Editor for the Bioelectromagnetics Journal during the years 2003-2005. She is also the Finnish representative at the International Advisory Committee of the WHO EMF Project. Since 1996 was a member of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), and acted as the Vice-Chairperson of ICNIRP in 2004-2008. |
