Eric van Rongen (1955) studied biology at the State University of Leyden, the Netherlands. After graduating in 1980 he was employed by the Radiobiological Institute of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research TNO. There he performed studies in tumor and normal tissue radiobiology. In 1989 he received his PhD on a dissertation concerning the side effects of radiotherapy on normal tissues. From 1989-1990 he was a Visiting Scientist at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, TX, USA. Since 1992 he is employed by the Health Council of the Netherlands and primarily involved with non-ionizing radiation. As Scientific Secretary of several Expert Committees he has written a number of advisory reports on the health effects of low and high frequency electromagnetic fields and UV radiation, but also on non-radiation subjects such as xenotransplantation and brain damage in boxers and soccer players. He regularly teaches at a number of academic and post-academic courses. He is member of several national and international organizations in the field of non-ionizing radiation. He has been secretary of the Non-ionizing Radiation Section of the Netherlands Society for Radiological Protection, was representative of the Netherlands with COST 281 and currently with COST BM0704. He is member of the International Advisory Committee of the WHO International EMF Project and was member of the WHO Task Groups that drafted the Environmental Health Criteria on Static Fields and on Low Frequency Fields. From 2002-2007 he was part-time seconded to WHO to work on the International EMF Project. He is member of the board of EBEA, of Standing Committee II (Biology) of ICNIRP and of the working group that drafted the latest EMF opinion of SCENIHR. |
